The basics of Reddit

Reddit contains forum like pages called ‘subreddit’, these are like groups of communities that talk about a specific topic. The topics on Reddit can range from funny cat pictures to rocket science. It’s a very diverse website full of information that has found great success. 

On Reddit, there are subreddits of just about everything and anything. You’re bound to find likeminded people on the site. If you want to seek out tips about personal finance for or read people’s posts about personal finance for example. There is a subreddit for this as people find support in asking questions relating to finance and advice too. Being able to communicate with a community of like-minded individuals can be refreshing. 

Upvote and Downvote:

Each post on a subreddit has something called an ‘up vote’ and a ‘down vote’ these are essentially a like or dislike button. For example, if you enjoyed a post or agreed with it you could upvote it. Upvoting the post will have a collective number of upvotes just like the ‘likes’ system on Facebook. The more upvotes a post has, the higher the post will be placed on a subreddit. This then will gain attention and it will be one of the first things someone would see on a particular subreddit.  From a marketing standpoint, it is important to make a post enjoyable or attractive to the users so that it will gain upvotes. A post with too many downvotes may indicate that the content is annoying users or they have lost interest in the content.

The user’s replies also get a separate upvote or downvote system, and the score of this is collected in their profile as something called ‘karma’.

Let’s say for example that you have created a new DIY related product that has a lot of interest. You are likely to want to advertise it further. You can create a sponsored advert for Reddit that will be visible on the DIY subreddit. This is one of the best ways to reach the desired market. As the users will see that the product is attractive and will benefit them. 

The audiences on Reddit can be difficult to engage with, but with the right written content, a sponsored post can go a long way. Reddit audiences typically like a post that is beneficial to the user and a post that brings something to the table. As an example, having your advertising written in a way which feels genuine to your target market is more likely to succeed. So promoting this further via paid advertising makes sense.

If you can familiarise yourself with Reddit and use it on a casual basis, before doing a sponsored post.
