Easy SEO Tips Any Site Can Implement.
What is SEO?
SEO is one of those buzz terms you hear about frequently and to be able to put SEO practises into place, you need to understand what SEO is.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation, which is important as it’s all about driving traffic to a site from Google’s ‘free’ organic results. Improving your SEO, unfortunately, isn’t about luck; it involves a variety of methods and techniques to build-up trust with search engines. Ultimately, the end goal is to end up on the 1st page of Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc, which of course will bring in more traffic to your site.
So where do we start with SEO? Here are some easy SEO ideas you can implement on your site.
Do a Website Audit:
By doing a website audit of your site, it allows you to flag up where the issues are and how to fix them.
There a variety of sites which offer a website audit; Neil Patel offers a free tool which analyses your site providing you with valuable information such as keywords, the pages that drive traffic to your site and more recently a full site audit which provides you with SEO issues on your site.
Another tool which can be used for a site audit is SEMrush, this is a paid tool but can be a worthwhile investment as their reports offer a lot more detail. SEMrush provides you with issues from within your site which are harmful like Page Loading Speed and Toxic Backlinks among others. Once you’ve completed your site audit, it’s time to move on to fixing any issues.
Figure out the best Keywords to use:
When it comes to SEO you need to figure out which keywords are most relevant for your niche.
Good solid keyword research is essential to find out what type of terms your customers will use in search engines to find your product or service – without it you may as well be doing SEO in the dark with your hands tied behind your back!
Using a tool – like Neil Patel’s free tool above, or even Google Keyword Planner – will provide you with relevant ideas and allows you to centre your onsite content around these keywords. This will then mean that search engines can review your onsite content and now exactly what your website is about.
Use Meta Data:
Creating Meta Data is another missed trick by a lot of sites when creating a page on your site or writing blog posts. Meta Data puts a specific set of mark-up code at the top of each page/post on your site and is the first thing search engines use to determine what your page or post is about. Search Engines also use this data to generate the clickable snippets of text that are displayed in their ‘free’ organic search results. Without metadata, it is unlikely you’ll rank high within search engines.
Write Long Form Content:
Writing posts which are longer in length do a lot better than those which are shorter. This is mostly down to shorter posts making the page or post seem ‘content thin’ to search engines.
It’s often debated on what the best length for a post is, however, most research advises over 1000 words is more likely to rank better in Google. With this said rambling within a post can make a poor read and make users leave your site, look at similar content in your niche to see the length of their posts to get an idea of how to rank well.
It is also helpful to include inbound and outbound links in the content on your site where applicable.
Optimise Website Speed:
Previously we’ve spoken about the importance of web design and that goes hand in hand with making sure your site load quickly in a users browser.
Studies show Page Load Speed is an organic ranking factor in Google especially meaning fast sites will always rank higher and get more qualified traffic – just as importantly it also creates a far better user experience.
Get Votes of Confidence:
Perhaps the most important factor in SEO is getting votes of confidence in the form of Backlinks.
In sort a backlink is made when another site on the internet links back to your site – the more other sites can be seen linking back to yours the more search engines will think that your site is popular and subsequently rank you higher in their results pages.
There are various methods of doing this and we cover some of these in this post
